AI Design Assistants

I wrote about AI and Architects recently. I said that I thought it was premature to try using AI. I might be wrong about that.

This past week I took my own advice and searched using AI and the prompt: What AI tools exist today for small-firm architects of buildings?

I used DeepSeek R1 through the app Perplexity.ai.

Results: AI tools for small-firm architects.

(I haven’t checked every link, but I have noticed that AutoDesk is over-represented.)

AI tools are transforming architectural practices by automating repetitive tasks, optimizing designs, and enhancing collaboration. For small-firm architects, these tools offer cost-effective solutions to improve efficiency and compete with larger firms. Here are key AI tools reshaping the industry in 2025:

Design Automation & Concept Generation

Maket.ai: Generates thousands of architectural plans within minutes based on client requirements and site constraints, using pattern recognition to replace manual drafting.

ARCHITEChTURES: Specializes in residential design, automating compliance checks and generating customized layouts while considering zoning laws and sustainability.

Hypar: Cloud-based platform that produces optimized building designs by inputting project parameters, with real-time collaboration for teams.

Designedbyai: Explores multiple design iterations rapidly using generative AI, ideal for early-stage concept development.

Site Analysis & Urban Planning

Spacemaker AI: Analyzes urban sites for sunlight, wind, noise, and zoning constraints, enabling data-driven decisions for high-density projects.

AutoDesk Forma: Integrates AI for site planning, energy consumption estimates, and sustainability assessments, suited for urban and green building projects.

Building Information Modeling (BIM)

Revit LT: A budget-friendly version of Autodesk Revit with AI-driven BIM tools for small firms, enabling collaborative 3D modeling and documentation.

ArchiCAD: Streamlines design workflows with AI-powered automation for tasks like material quantification and error detection.

Visualization & Rendering

ArkoAI: Generates high-quality renderings directly from SketchUp, Rhino3D, or Revit at $39/month, maintaining 3D geometry accuracy.

Render a House: Browser-based tool that transforms floor plans into photorealistic visuals, enhancing client presentations.

Compliance & Cost Management

Archistar: Automates regulatory compliance checks and generates design options aligned with local building codes.

DeepBlocks: Conducts financial feasibility studies by integrating real estate data, zoning laws, and construction costs.

Sustainability Optimization

Finch: Evaluates energy efficiency, daylighting, and carbon footprint during early design phases, ensuring eco-friendly outcomes.

AutoDesk Forma: Provides real-time environmental impact simulations to guide material selection and HVAC optimization.

Collaboration & Project Management

SWAPP: Automates construction document generation, reducing manual errors and accelerating project timelines.

PlanGrid: AI-powered platform for tracking progress, managing budgets, and coordinating teams during construction.

Take Away

I was particularly impressed with what ARCHITEChTURES was seemingly able to do based on the video. If it isn’t time to start using AI, it is definitely time to get familiar.
